Florida Public Services Union (FPSU) in a joint statement with Association of Educational Secretaries and Office Professionals (AESOP) announced its support for Superintendent of School District of Palm Beach County candidates.
In a press statement FPSU’s President Alphonso Mayfield stated that we believe the interim Superintendent Wayne Gent has demonstrated his ability to run school district effectively. “We would welcome the prospect of continuing working with the Interim Superintendent if the School Board decides to appoint him as permanent Superintendent,” said Mr. Mayfield.
FPSU is also willing to work with candidates Dr. Constance Jones and Dr. Janis Andrews. Mr. Mayfield further stated, “At a time when the school district is facing numerous challenges, we need a candidate who builds a broader consensus around the vision for the school district. Mr. Gent has shown this in his actions while Dr. Jones and Dr. Andrews have demonstrated their commitment towards achieving this vision.”
“We had a good discussion with the candidates about the complex issues facing the school board, including the budget crisis, improving quality of services, low graduation rates, privatization and employees’ welfare,” Mr. Mayfield further added. “We are certain that these candidates will work in a collaborative fashion with the school district employees to invest in the future of our children.”
AESOP President Terri L. Mathews in her statement said, “AESOP feels confident that these candidates are the right choice for the school district. We stand in solidarity with FPSU in selecting the candidates that are committed to working with unions in dealing with problems the school district is facing.”
