MIAMI (August 22, 2024) – In a decisive move, Florida voters have voiced their disapproval of Governor Ron DeSantis’ education policies in Tuesday’s election. The results indicate a clear rejection of the controversial education agenda that has dominated recent political discourse in the state.
The election saw a significant turnout, with voters from diverse backgrounds uniting to express their concerns over the direction of Florida’s education system under the current administration. Central to the backlash were issues such as the banning of books, attacks on diversity and inclusion policies, privatization and defunding of public schools through the voucher programs, Cultural War issues such as restrictions on curriculum content, and above all the undermining of educators’ autonomy.
“This election sends a powerful message that Florida’s parents, teachers, and students deserve an education system that prioritizes learning over political agendas,” said Alphonso Mayfield, Treasurer of SEIU Florida and President of Florida Public Services Union. “Floridians have made it clear that they want an education system that is inclusive, fact-based, and free from partisan interference.”
One thing is clear: Floridians are fighting back. Of the 23 Desantis-endorsed candidates, only 6 won their election, while another 11 lost and 6 others will advance to run-offs this November. Of those that won, they were in republican strongholds of Lee (Fort Myers), Brevard (Melbourne), and conservative areas of Duval (Jacksonville). Desantis’ candidates failed miserably in Hillsborough, Pinellas, Orange, Broward and Miami-Dade counties. SEIU Florida endorsed 9 races in Tuesday’s election, with all but one ending in victory or a November run-off.
“This is a victory for Florida’s children and their future,” added Alyssa Roelans, Executive Director of SEIU Florida. “We look forward to working with leaders across the state to create a more equitable and effective education system.”
