Libraries are meant to be safe spaces for learning, gathering, and community support. But for too long, FPSU members working in the City of St. Petersburg’s libraries faced unsafe conditions, including violent incidents, threats from patrons, and a lack of proper security measures.

Enough was enough. Library workers, backed by their union, took action—circulating petitions, protesting, and demanding change. And now, thanks to their collective power, the City has agreed to add more security officers to the city’s libraries.

A Growing Safety Crisis

For months, library staff raised concerns about escalating safety issues. Incidents of harassment, verbal abuse, and even physical altercations were becoming more frequent. But in November 2024, the crisis reached a breaking point—a library patron was brutally stabbed in the chest by an unstable patron.

This horrific attack made it clear that the city’s neglect of worker and community safety was no longer just an issue of discomfort—it was a matter of life and death. Yet, even after this tragic event, city officials failed to take immediate action to prevent future violence.

FPSU members knew they couldn’t wait for change—they had to make it happen.

The Power of Collective Action

Library workers, supported by FPSU, launched a petition demanding workers have a seat at the table to improve safety. They rallied their co-workers, gathered public support, and delivered a clear message: Libraries should be safe for workers and the community.

When petitions alone weren’t enough, they escalated their efforts with protests and public pressure campaigns to make city leaders listen.

A Hard-Earned Victory

Their efforts paid off. The City of St. Petersburg has now committed to adding more security officers to libraries, ensuring that workers and patrons can feel safe. This win proves that when workers stand together and demand better, they can move even the most resistant decision-makers.

What’s Next?

While this is a major victory, FPSU remains vigilant. Workers will continue to monitor security improvements, hold leadership accountable, and ensure that all library staff have the protection they need to serve the public safely.

This fight wasn’t just about security—it was about respect. No worker should fear for their life on the job. Every worker deserves to feel safe, and when unions fight, workers win.

If you’re not yet a member, now is the time to join FPSU. Together, we make real change happen.
